Every now and then I go to Piedmont drag way to shoot some of the cars driving in the drift events. Ive shot a lot of pictures at this track and of these cars and these two are probably some of my favorite pictures I have shot at the drift events at Piedmont Drag way. In the first picture I really like how the smoke is flowing off the tire as its spinning and going around the car I also really like the angle of it. In the second shot I really like the composition of the photograph and how the car is in the lower thirds of the picture.

I recently did a project for another class and the topic I chose to shoot was skateboarders and how they dressed. Ever since I started skateboarding and being around skateboarding I always really liked the different lifestyles and wardrobe of different skateboarders and I’m so fascinated by the rebel mentality against society that people who skate have. I did the project originally to show the unique style that skateboarders have but I couldn’t get enough people to shoot so I had two work with two different people. I feel that a lot of the fashion trends that are popular now a days have come from the skateboarding community and I feel as if they don’t get as much credit as they should.

I got into cars because of one of my best friends Bailey. He has been around cars his whole life and when I started to hang around him more I started to like it more and more. I’ve always loved to see cars in action. I’ve been to a couple of nascar races and a couple of drag races but what I really fell in love with is the drift events drifting is a type of racing that not a lot of people know about or enjoy to watch. I went to a drift event this past weekend and saw all these guys in these really beat cars with nice engines in them go 60 mph and and just throw there steering wheel all the way to the left or right and start drifting. A lot of these guys are don’t have the best car and don’t have a lot of experience so a lot of the time they are crashing and that’s what I love about it, it’s just pure fun no competition really it’s just to have a good time. Go skate day happened on the 21st of June. Go Skate day is pretty much what it sounds like, a bunch of skateboarders get together and have fun skateboarding. A lot of times there will be events held on Go Skate Day or sometimes a bunch of skaters from one city will get together and skate around the streets of that city and take it over. In places like New York it’s really big and every year there is hundreds of skaters that get together and take over New York. This year I went to Latham Skatepark in Greensboro for Go skate day and the local skate shop “Stolen” was having a contest for all the local skaters around the area. Cars have not always been around in my life but I started getting into cars around 7th grade when I met my best friend Bailey. I really liked older cars and the idea of building a car and working on it as a project, and then I figured out about drifting. Drifting is a very special sport where you drift around a track going very fast with other people drifting on the track and you have to try and get close to the other people drifting on the track I like the idea of drifting because the cars are so special and one of a kind. This picture is of my friend Baileys BMW e30. 

Skateboarding has been a part of my life since I moved to North Carolina in 2006. It started off with me and my friends building ramps in our driveways and learning new stuff all the time, and then progressed to us going to the local skateparks all the time. I stopped skateboarding for a long time because I just thought I wasn’t cut out for it and I really enjoyed watching other people skate and photographing people skateboarding. Skateboarding has done so much for me, all my friends I have now I met through skateboarding and I respect skateboarders in general and the mindset to fall hard and be able to get back up and complete what you were trying to do. 

My Name is Keith Purvis and I first got into photography when I traveled to Sevilla Spain to study abroad for Filmmaking. I always enjoyed taking pictures when I was a kid i would always walk around with a disposable camera in my backpack. I love the idea of traveling to a new place and being able to capture that place in your own way, It also opens your eyes to so many new things and makes you visualize the world in a different way when you are looking through the viewfinder of a camera. Lately I haven’t been able to travel and visit new places, but over the break I got time to go down to Catawba Falls in Asheville, NC.
